STEICHEN. L'art de la robe.
STEICHEN, Edward (illustrator) and CORNU, Paul (author). 'L'art de la robe', in the April 1911 issue of Art et Décoration, vol. 29, pp. 101-118. Paris: Librairie centrale des beaux-arts, 1911.
The first edition. Steichen's photographs of Poiret gowns constitute fashion's first photo shoot in the modern sense. For the first time photography served to promote fashion as a fine art, rather than simply reproduce clothes. To help the reader digest this substantial innovation, Steichen's ground-breaking photographs appear alongside Georges Lepape's familiar drawings, and wrapped in Cornu's article on the art of dress. Here Cornu remarks that clothes are made of ephemeral materials, but that a gown's essence and elegance are made eternal by the gifted fashion illustrator: artists like Saint-Aubin, Watteau, Vernet, Gavarni, Iribe, Lepape, and now Steichen, fashion's first photographer. This copy is in the publisher’s green cloth binding, gathered with the other issues for the half year from January to June; when issued separately, it was published in printed wrappers.
